Seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
