Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
