RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
