Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
